How to Draw an Anime Walking Pose: A Step-by-Step Guide by Japanese Pro Artists

The short answer: One leg holds the weight while the other lifts and swings forward, so the body's weight keeps moving forward. Build the pose from the hips and where the legs join, watch which way each knee points, and choose the moment of the step you want to show.

If your walking characters look frozen, you are probably drawing a pose instead of one moment in a movement. This guide covers how the weight moves, the walk from the side and from behind, the knee lift, the switch from a fast walk to a run, and one full step cycle.

Step 01 · The weight moves forward

What actually happens when a character walks?

The leg holding the weight stays put while the other leg lifts and stretches forward, and the body's weight moves forward with it.

A walk is a chain of movements. The foot opposite the one carrying the weight comes up and reaches forward, and the center of gravity travels forward over it. Think about which way each knee points, and bring the moving foot slightly inward as it passes.

A single illustration freezes one moment of that chain, and the moment you pick changes the feel of the picture. So think about what happened just before and what comes next, and decide which moment of the walk you want to show.

Red-pen checkDraw the step as part of a flow. Ask what the body did a moment ago and what it does next.

Step 02 · The walk from the side

How do you draw a walk from the side?

Build it from the hips and where the legs join, and set the near foot and the far foot at different depths.

From the side, the legs swing from the hips, so get the hips and where the legs join right before you draw the legs.

When you show the ground, remember that the near foot and the far foot are not on the same line. The far foot lands a little farther back in depth.

From the side: the hips and where the legs join first, and the two feet land at different depths.

Step 03 · The walk from behind

How do you draw a walk from behind?

Think hard about the knee angle, because it decides which way the foot points.

Seen from behind, the bend of each knee tells the viewer where the foot is going. Get the knee wrong and the whole leg points the wrong way.

The leg that stretches back toward the viewer is the hard one to draw. Don't skip it. Keep practicing it.

Red-pen checkCheck the knees first. The feet follow the knees.

From behind: the knee angle sets the direction of the foot.

Step 04 · The knee lift

How high does the knee come up when you walk?

Only a little. The knee lift is part of a walk, but it stays small.

Every step includes a knee lift. In a walk you don't raise the knee high. Picture it coming up just a bit.

Watch where the legs join the body and which way the knees point, so the lifted leg still looks attached to the hips.

Red-pen checkKnee too high? Bring it down. A walk only lifts it slightly.

Step 05 · From fast walk to run

How does a fast walk turn into a run?

The feet come up a little higher than in a normal walk, the hips twist and the hair starts to move.

Right at the moment a fast walk becomes a run, the back foot rises a little higher than it would in a normal walk. Add a twist at the hips and let the hair move a little.

Keep the center of gravity in mind. The body has to stay balanced over the leg that is still on the ground.

Red-pen checkDecide where the center of gravity is before you add the movement.

Step 06 · One full step cycle

What does one full walking cycle look like?

The same four phases repeat, first with the left leg holding the weight, then with the right.

The diagram shows a walk frame by frame, from the side and from the front. The numbers 1 to 4 are the phases, and L or R tells you which leg is holding the weight. In phase 3, you honestly can't tell which leg is holding the weight, so its L or R is only a rough label. The red lines track the height of the head, the tilt of the shoulders and hips, and the waist.

In phase 1, the supporting leg stands straight up and the body is at its tallest. In phase 2, the supporting leg is behind the body and pushes it forward. After phase 4, the same phases come round again on the other leg.

Red-pen checkBefore you draw a walk, decide which leg is holding the weight.

Where people usually get stuck

My walking character looks like she is standing still.

Move the weight forward and pick a moment in the middle of the step. Think about what came just before and what comes next.

Both feet look glued to the same line.

From the side, the near foot and the far foot land at different depths. Set the far foot a little farther back.

The legs look wrong from behind.

Check the knee angle first. The bend of the knee decides which way the foot points.

Anime walking pose FAQ

How high should the knee lift in a walking pose?

Only a little. A knee lift is part of every step, but in a normal walk the knee comes up just slightly. Watch where the legs join the hips and which way the knees point.

What changes when a walk turns into a run?

The back foot rises a little higher than in a normal walk, the hips twist and the hair starts to move. Keep the center of gravity over the leg still on the ground.

Which leg carries the weight in a walk cycle?

It switches. The same four phases run first on one leg and then on the other. In the first phase the supporting leg stands straight and the body is at its tallest.

How do I get feedback on my walking pose drawings?

When you join an Anime Art Academy course, a professional Japanese artist gives you personal advice and draws red-line corrections directly on your drawing. There is no limit on how many times you can submit. The only rule: post one drawing at a time, and wait for your teacher's reply before posting the next.
